The Barclay Centre, in New York, witnessed an epic encounter last night.
After suffering the disappointment of seeing the fight between Andy Lee and Peter Quillin downgraded from a WBO middleweight title fight to just another fight after Peter Quillin unexpectedly failed to make the weight, New York witnessed a cracking bout.
It was perhaps ironic that after the weigh-in complications that saw the fight down-graded it should end up as a draw with Andy Lee, as we predicted, surviving a couple of scares on the way.
Indeed it looked as if the fight would be ended in the third round when Lee, having already been dropped in the first round by the heavy-punching Quillin was again dropped in round three.
But, to his credit, the Irish fighter showed his resilience to keep his unbeaten, since 2012, record and almost evened up the score when he put Quillin on the canvas in round seven.
After side-stepping Billy Joe Saunders to take the Quillin fight, a fight in which his WBO middleweight title wasn?t, eventually, put on the line, Andy Lee will now be expected to give Saunders his chance with a date and venue to be announced.
We suspect Lee, 30-years of age, would like it to be in Ireland whilst Saunders camp would prefer it to happen in the UK.
