But has he ended an era?
Across the pond last night, Sergey Kovalev showed that he is the current face of the light-heavyweight scene.
In a unification bout, Kovalev took the verdict, on points, against forty-nine year-old Bernard Hopkins.
The result means that Kovalev, who took the WBO belt off of our very own Nathan Cleverly, now holds the WBO, IBF and WBA versions of the belt.
Kovalev also became first fighter to score a knockdown against Hopkins and go on to win the fight, the only other two were eventually beaten by Hopkins.
Hopkins, nearing his 50th birthday, started the fight poorly and never really looked like edging his way back into it.
For Kovalev it is time to enjoy the spoils of war with a hard-earned victory, for Hopkins, surely Father Time has knocked on his door now and called time on a wonderful career.
