After chasing a mega-fight for the past eighteen months or so and with bouts against Floyd Mayweather Junior and Manny Pacquiao not happening, Amir Khan has finally got his big fight.

The Bolton fighter will be making the step up to middleweight to take on the formidable Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez on May 7th in Las Vegas.

Talking about the big fight, Khan is quoted as having remarked,

?I want the biggest fights. Canelo is an amazing fighter and I?m going in as the underdog ? but I can shock the world.?

His opponent may have other ideas when it comes to that but Khan, it has to be said, is taking a huge risk in stepping up to middleweight.

Nobody can doubt his bravery in the ring, he?s mixed it with some great fighters but there?s always been the feeling that when caught flush on the chin he?s in trouble.

Perhaps Khan envisages using his lightening hand speed to befuddle his opponent and outbox him for twelve rounds.

But the announcement of the fight just had to include a reference to Kell Brook who many thought Khan would be meeting in the UK early this summer, a fight that now looked unlikely to happen, with Amir being attributed as having quoted,

?I was offering him a lot of money to fight me but he didn?t want to take it.

?I?m going in with somebody who is probably twice as good as Kell.?

You are Amir and I pray you?ve judged this one correct otherwise it could be a long way back
