Over in New York last night, in front of 7,000 fans at the Barclay Centre, Amir Khan took the honours against Chris Algieri.
Khan took the verdict on the score-cards of all three judges to press home his belief that he should be Floyd Mayeather Juniors next / final opponent.
The verdicts on the judges score-cards at the end of twelve rounds were:-
? 117-111
? 115-113
? 117-111
and all in favour of the boxer from Bolton, England.
The key to the fight was Khan?s lightning fast combinations that constantly troubled Algieri, enabling Amir to build up a decent lead.
However, the former two-time light-welterweight champion didn?t have things all his own way and was caught several times in the early rounds as Algieri started quickly. Amir also had to show his stamina in the closing rounds as his opponent finished strongly.
Talking about beating Algieri in his own backyard Amir remarked after the fight,
‘He came to fight, wanted to win, had his home crowd, but I came here to win.
‘The crowd really fired me up the last three rounds when Chris really came at me hard.’
And naturally the lad from Bolton had something to say about a possible showdown with the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Junior, adding,
‘Amir Khan wants to fight Floyd Mayweather.
‘I want that next. I’m number one World Boxing Council challenger. He’s the champion. So let’s make it happen.’
Will Mayweather accept the challenge or look elsewhere that still remains the golden question.
