In just her seventh fight since turning professional, Ireland?s Katie Taylor won the WBA lightweight title.

Matched against the Argentine fighter, Anahai Sanchez, at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Taylor knew she was in a position whereby she could win the title vacated by her opponent, after Sanchez failed to make the weight, but her opponent, even I she won, couldn?t.

Cheered on by the vociferous Cardiff crowd, Taylor made a decent start to the fight, starting fast and catching Sanchez with some punishing shots, one of which, a decent body shot, saw Sanchez crumple to the canvas in the second round.

Sanchez recovered though and as the fight developed, started to land some stinging shots of her own. Taylor was unbowed though with her fast combinations giving her success.

Although Taylor picked up a cut over her right eye late on she was not going to be deprived of her moment of glory.

At the sound of the final whistle, Taylor and all those inside the stadium knew she was the new WBA lightweight title something confirmed when all three judges awarded the fight to the girl from Bray by 99 points to 90.

Our congratulations go to Katie Taylor on a superb achievement.
