The Metro Arena, in Newcastle gave a hero?s welcome to Anthony Joshua as he made his way into the ring last night.
Joshua, returning to the ring after an absence courtesy of a back injury, was making his eleventh professional appearance having demolished all his ten previous opponents inside three rounds.
Last night, in Newcastle, it was hoped that his opponent, Jason Gavern, could extend the Watford fighter and possibly take him the distance.
Unfortunately, that wasn?t the case, Joshua looked a class above his hapless opponent who was making his fiftieth appearance in the ring.
Gavern was on the canvas three times in the third, mostly from innocuous looking punches, before the referee called a halt to proceedings.
Talking about his 11th straight professional win, all coming inside three rounds by knockouts, Joshua had this to say,
‘Expectations were high and Jason was an awkward opponent.’
‘I was a bit ring-rusty and was not able to display all I’ve been doing at the gym.’
For many the bout was something of an anti-climax, we?re not pointing the finger at Anthony, he can only box who is put in front of him, but Gavern, even though he took Deontay Wilder four rounds, wasn?t a worthy opponent.
Let?s hope that when Joshua faces Kevin Johnson, in his next fight, we get our money?s worth!
