The vibrant heavyweight scene is alive with anticipation as to who will fight who and when.

Here in the United Kingdom we’re eagerly waiting to see who both Anthony Joshua and David Haye will be matched with and, of course, there is the small matter of when Tyson Fury and Wladiir Klitschko will get it on again.

But, across the pond, we’re also waiting to see when Deontay ‘Bronze Bomber’ Wilder will finally fulfil that mandatory challenge awaiting him.

It seems an age since Wilder acknowledged that he would have to, eventually, ditch the constant flow of hand picked opponents building up his record, to face a real live wire in Alexander Povetkin.

But the day is dawning and we’re hearing that a date of May 21st has been pencilled in for the bout which pitches Wilder, with a record that reads 36-0 with 35 wins coming by way of knockout, against Povetkin who has a record that reads 30-1 with 22 wins coming by stoppage.

Now for all I know, Wilder might well blow Povetkin away inside a few rounds, but at least then I can sleep knowing he has made that mandatory defence that is stopping many believing his wild style makes him the real deal.
