Otherwise boxing could have made the headlines for all the wrong reasons!
The furore surrounding the decision, made by Dominic Ingle, to throw in the towel in the fifth round on Saturday night as Kell Brook failed in his bid to dethrone Gennady Golovkin, seems to have subsided.
Instead it has been replaced by the realisation that in throwing in the towel Ingle acted in a professional and caring manner that stopped Kell Brook from being seriously injured.
Commenting on the decision made by Ingle, the shows promoter Eddie Hearn, remarked,
‘Kell traded with him and had a real go but it was absolutely the right decision from Dominic Ingle.
‘I know there were a few boos from the crowd but he knows his fighter more than anyone and that kind of injury can get worse and worse in a fight and ultimately end someone’s career.’
And, although Brook himself was devastated by the stoppage at the time, his views had also changed in the cold light of the day after with the Sheffield fighter remarking to the media,
‘He’s like a father figure. It was the right decision and I can fight another day.
‘I was getting caught, and getting caught. It could have ended up seriously bad.’
It probably would have and Dominic Ingle should be commended on his action, it quite probably saved his man from being badly hurt.
