Nathan Cleverly, after a two and a half year reign as the WBO light-heavyweight champions, was stopped by the hard-hitting Russian Sergey Kovalev.

The writing was perhaps on the wall when Cleverly, attempting to secure a fight against a top name American, decided to put everything on the line against a fighter who had won all 22 of his fights and 19 by knockout.

With the Cardiff crowd cheering their man into the ring, Cleverly never really got into the fight with the Russian making an impressive start and dominating from the first bell. Kovalev used his strength and power to hunt Cleverly down and dropped him with a powerful punch in round three.

Cleverly beat the count but was hit by a further barrage of bruising punches, with the round drawing to a close it looked as if the referee had stopped the fight but it appeared the bell had sounded.

Coming out for round four Kovalev was straight onto the attack and after a further barrage of blows the referee stepped in to stop the fight, Kovalev had deservedly taken the WBO light-heavyweight crown from Cleverly.
