On the under-card at the Liverpool Echo Arena last night, George Groves put his mandatory world title shot on the line against the awkward American, Denis Douglin.

In a fight that probably proved to be more difficult than George had anticipated, George finally emerged victorious in round seven when an explosive barrage of punches gave the referee little option other than to call a halt to the fight.

However, it was a bloodied and bruised Groves that left the ring with the super-middleweight suffering from a nasty looking cut across the bridge of his nose, a cut that could take some time to heal.

Talking about the tricky encounter, George had this to say to the media afterwards,

‘My coach says it was a 5/10 display. I’ll have a look back at it, but I’d probably agree. Fighting a southpaw is a new experience and just what I needed. I had to change my distance and range and find my radar to someone with an opposite style.

‘It’s good to get a stoppage and now I want to roll on for the next one. I want the quickest route to a world title.’

But let that cut heal first George!
