Last night, like so many, I was enthralled by the fight between Carl Froch and George Groves.

With the WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles up for grabs, George Groves surprised many by the manner in which he went about dismantling Froch.

Groves unbeaten in 19 fights, boasted beforehand how he would take the fight to the champion and exactly how he would dismantle him, but nobody really believed him

In fact, his ring-walk was accompanied by a barrage of boos as the 20,000 packed into the arena awaited the entrance of Froch.

But Groves was a man on a mission almost like a quiet assassin intent on going about his job. Froch was put on the seat of his pants in round one and was on wobbly legs. Groves continued to enjoy the better of the action and constantly hurt the champion.

Of course Froch had his moments but nothing could deter Groves as he marched towards glory and it seemed that Froch would only hang on to his crowns by claiming a late stoppage.

As round nine continued to provide the spoils of war, Froch landed a couple of punches forcing Groves back.

Groves was hurt but didn?t look as if he was in serious trouble, punches were being thrown back and it just looked as if he?d make it through the crisis before, incredibly, the referee, Howard Foster, stepped in to stop the fight prompting a huge outburst of criticism from everybody.

The studio pundits blasted the decision as disgraceful, the huge crowd booed and Groves stood there completely bewildered knowing that he?d been robbed.

Incredibly, having won most of the previous eight rounds only one judge had a score-card that resembled what we?d seen, inexplicably the other two judges had Groves winning by 78-77.

Froch may have held on to his belts but Groves was the fighter who?d made the bigger impact on a night when the fight lived up to its hype, it?s just a crying shame that Howard Foster had made such a huge error!

  • in a great fight, Groves was excellent and far outweighed my expectations tbh, watching and rewatching the final round, it always shows the same result that the fight was stopped early
