The wheels turn in mysterious ways when it comes to the world of boxing.

Having established himself as the mandatory challenger for the WBC version of the super-middleweight title, George Groves could have, quite rightly, expected to have faced the WBC champion Anthony Dirrell in the coming months.

However, you?d be quite wrong.

Dirrell, it would seem, doesn?t appear to be in any rush to face Groves and recently applied to the WBC for a four month extension before he faces Groves.

Now you would expect that the WBC would have turned the request down, insisting that Dirrell fulfils his obligation and faces Groves in his next fight.

But, inexplicably, the request was put to the vote and the WBC officials agreed to the request without actually giving a reason why Dirrell should be able to flout his obligations.

Groves promoter, Kalle Sauerland is as perplexed as we are, using his Twitter account to remark,

?WBCBoxing voted in favor of Dirrell four month extension 4 Voluntary Defence. No opponent or explanation given as yet.?

It now looks as if Groves will be kept waiting until at least September before facing Dirrell.

What a shoddy way to conduct an organization that is amongst the most revered the sport has to offer.
