Last night, at the SSE Arena Wembley, George Groves kept his ambitions of fighting for a world title for a fourth time, were kept alive with a comprehensive victory over the German fighter Eduard Gutknecht.
Defending his WBA International super-middleweight title, Groves was rarely troubled by his opponent.
Looking to have his old confidence and swagger back and enjoying life being coached by Shane McGuigan, Groves took the verdict on all three of the judge?s scorecards, with the fight being scored:
? 119 ? 110
? 119 ? 109
? 119 ? 109
Groves bossed most rounds and had his opponent hurt in the fourth round with a couple of head shots. Later in the fight Groves opened a cut, above the eye, on Gutknecht?s face and it seemed as if Groves would get the stoppage he wanted.
However Gutknecht, who has a victory over Gennady Golovkin on his career record albeit in the amateur version of the sport, hung on in there and heard the final bell.
After the fight, Groves had this to say about the fight,
‘I am very happy with how I fought, it went exactly to plan.
‘I set a great tempo and busted him up badly. I am surprised he made it to the bell – Gutknecht is a tough character.
‘We want real, big, proper fights. There was no world title on the line, but we knew Gutknecht was going to give me a tough fight. It will push me on for a world title fight and, ideally, I would love a rematch with Badou Jack.’
Hopefully George?s chances of getting another world title shot are that much closer now.
