At the Forum in Inglewood, California last night, Gennady Golovkin showed he truly is the best at his weight in the world.
Defending his IBF / IBO and WBC championship belts against the American fighter Dominic Wade, Golovkin had listened all week to Wade telling him that he was the man to end the myth that Golovkin was unbeatable.
Unfortunately, Wade found out that when it comes to fighting Golovkin is a class above anybody else in the middleweight division.
Last night, Wade was put on the seat of his pants three times before the fight was stopped in only the second round. The first knock down came in the first round and Wade looked stunned by the power Golovkin has. The other two knockdowns came in the second round with further right hands scrambling Wade?s senses.
The final knockdown saw Wade remain down and the fight was duly stopped. Talking about Golovkin, after being stopped, the beaten Wade acknowledged,
?His power is real.
?It was more than I even expected. I was trying to get comfortable in there. Once he hits you, it makes it very difficult to get comfortable. I could have done one or two things a little differently in there, but he?s a great champion, and he has everything you need to be a champion.?
The win takes Golovkin to a professional record of 35-0 with 32 of those wins coming from knockout, whilst Wade slips to 18-1 with 12 coming by knockout.
As for his next fight, Golovkin wants to take on Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez, thereby possibly adding the WBC middleweight belt to his growing collection.
