The road to the world title fight just seemed to open up for the lad from Birmingham.
The announcement yesterday confirming that Frankie Gavin will be Kell Brook?s next opponent, in London, on May 30th, wasn?t greeted with universal approval by the fighting crowd.
After taking the title off of Shawn Porter and defending it against Jo Jo Dan, it was hoped that Brook would mix it in higher company.
However, in choosing to take on Gavin, a fighter who has had mixed results later, Brook has left himself wide open to criticism.
Now Gavin could surprise everyone and produce the fight of his life and push Brook all the way, but the fighting public will still feel as if they?ve been short-changed.
But here at Vital Boxing we must give full credit to Gavin top marks for having the testicular fortitude to take the fight.
After the fight had been confirmed, Gavin told the media world about how his quest to fight for a world title had seen him instigate the clash, with Gavin remarking,
?My career has been full of ups and downs. I had some family troubles but I am well over them now.
?This is the big chance for me on the big stage and I intend to take it.
?I know I can do Brook and I will.
?I didn?t even discuss money, it was a case of sign now and talk about my purse later.
?This has never been about money for me ? it?s about becoming world champion and now I have the chance I am going to take it.?
Gavin is a former world amateur champion, can he make that transition to become the IBF world welterweight champion?
I guess we?ll find out on May 30th.
