At the Hull Ice Arena, Gavin McDonnell?s hopes of making history were dashed when he lost his WBC super-bantamweight title fight against the Mexican Rey Vargas.
If Gavin had of beaten the classy Mexican then he and his identical twin brother, Jamie, would have become the first identical twins to hold world titles at the same time.
But it wasn?t to be, Vargas was far too classy for Gavin McDonnell and took the decision on points with the judges scoring as thus:
? 117 ? 111 (in favour of Vargas)
? 114 ? 114 (a draw)
? 116 ? 112 (in favour of Vargas)
Quite how one judge viewed it as a draw is mystifying as the Mexican had the upper-hand for huge swathes of the fight.
Gavin started too slowly and gave his opponent too much respect, probably aware of the punching power the unbeaten Mexican possessed.
Although the partisan crowd inside the Hull Ice Arena cheered their man on it wasn?t until the 10th round that he looked as if he could trouble the Mexican, catching him with a big right but Vargas simply smiled and got back to doing what he does best, boxing.
At the sound of the final bell, the Mexican threw his hands in the air before slumping to the canvas and looking towards the heavens, aware that he was the new WBC super-bantamweight champion of the world.
Gavin McDonnell had done his best and far from disgraced himself against a man who was just far better on the night.
