The surprise of the week was, no doubt, the announcement that Amir Khan had signed to fight the Mexican fighter Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez at a catch-weight of 155 pounds.
Many pundits believe that the Bolton fighter, with a record of 31-3 with 19 wins coming by way of stoppage, has bitten off more than he can chew taking on the younger, heavier Mexican who boasts a record that reads 46-1-1.
However, with Khan having missed out on mega-fights against Floyd Mayweather Junior and Manny Pacquiao, Khan believes he can spring a surprise on May 7th using his footwork and superior hand speed.
One person who is siding with Khan in this fight is our heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
The IBO / WBA / WBO heavyweight title holder believes Khan will emerge the victor, remarking to Sky Sports,
‘He couldn?t get Mayweather, he couldn?t get Pacquiao so who is the biggest name out there?
?It had to be Alvarez or Golovkin ? but he is a full-blown middleweight whereas Alvarez is a blown-up welterweight and seems a big puncher, but has hardly knocked anyone out in his last five opponents, has he??
It all makes for an interesting fight but one where Khan will clearly be the under-dog whilst also having to enter a Las Vegas arena that will have a very partisan Mexican support cheering on Alvarez.
