After becoming the first boxer to defeat Leo Santa Cruz and, in the process, become the WBA featherweight champion of the world, it looks very much as if the public are going to be treated to a re-match.
Carl Frampton, the first Northern Irish fighter to win world titles at two different weights, has given broad hints that his next fight will see the vanquished Leo Santa Cruz given the chance to regain his title.
Talking about the possibility of a re-match, Frampton has remarked to the media,
‘It is the fight people are talking about and potentially it is going to be the next one for me. There is to be a meeting next week.
‘Santa Cruz is the fight I am keen for and I feel I can beat him anywhere in the world.’
Initially, it looked as if Frampton would meet Santa Cruz on this side of the pond, but now the inference is that it will be in the US with Frampton further adding,
‘America is the most likely destination.
‘If it had been the summer we could have done outdoors in Belfast, but Windsor Park in December is not going to work.?
And as for when, Frampton further commented,
‘I would like to have the fight before Christmas because I have not had Christmas off since I turned pro and I would like to spend it with my kids.’
It?s already a mouth-watering prospect even if it won?t be on these shores.
