Carl Frampton?s hopes that he could get a chance to avenge the first defeat of his professional career against Leo Santa Cruz, in a third fight with the Mexican, could be about to be dealt a blow.

Although Santa Cruz is prepared to take a third fight with Frampton, although the chances of it happening in Belfast are receding fast thanks to the intervention of his father, the governing body may be about to intervene.

It?s being reported that the President of the World Boxing Association (WBA), Gilberto Mendoza, is set to order Santa Cruz to make a mandatory defence, at featherweight, with the new champion taking on his Mexican counterpart Abner Mares.

If that is the case, Frampton may be forced to take an alternative route and navigate himself towards fighting for another version of the featherweight title.

That is unless Abner Mares can be paid to step aside and then take on the winner of Frampton v Santa Cruz III

We?ll endeavour to keep a watchful eye out for any developments.
