In the early hours of Sunday morning (UK time), Carl Frampton climbed into the ring to take on Leo Santa Cruz.

Having beaten Santa Cruz in their first fight, in New York, in July, Frampton was determined that he would do the same in the re-match in Las Vegas, at the MGM Grand Arena.

However, despite being cheered on by 5,000 of his supporters, it was to be Santa Cruz that was to take the verdict on points, after another thrilling fight.

After twelve hard-fought rounds, the judges scored the fight as thus:

? 115 ? 113 (in favour of Santa Cruz)
? 114 ? 114 (draw)
? 115 ? 113 (in favour of Santa Cruz)

The defeat was the first to Frampton?s career although, after two fights, there is talk of a third.

Santa Cruz got off to the better start with the 28-year-old Mexican making use of his height and reach advantage. Frampton, after a slow start, started to come into the fight more but Santa Cruz?s relentless use of the jab saw the fight edge towards the Mexican.

Frampton, in the latter rounds, started to edge back into the fight but the Mexican held firm to take back the belt he?d lost back in July, in New York.
