Probably the most charismatic boxer of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, made his professional debut on Sunday.
Charlie Flynn who won a lightweight gold in Glasgow and who had a smile as wide as the River Clyde when he joined in the rendition of ?Flower of Scotland? receiving his medal; was fighting Ibrar Riyaz at the Thistle Hotel.
Flynn emerged victorious winning 40-36 on points and can now start to move through the professional ranks.
Talking about his first professional bout, Flynn had this to say,
‘The atmosphere was unbelievable,’
‘They were crammed in like sardines. I was blown away by the support.’
And as for the fight, he further added,
‘I was feeling good in there. He was a tough nut to crack.?
?Why not go in and box him? I’ve never been four rounds before.
‘He was using his head, using his elbows. My coach said to me, ‘work behind your jab, use your technical ability, stop running in like a madman’.
‘Everybody loved it, they got their four rounds, it was great.
‘He wanted me to walk into a shot. He was showing off, inviting me in so he could drop a bomb on me. He’s got an old head on him.
‘He was waiting on me to make a stupid mistake – a daft wee amateur who thinks he’s the golden boy – and bang, he lamps me. I just kept my composure.’
Somehow I think, over the coming years, we?re going to hear a lot more of young Charlie Flynn.
