Last night at the O2 Arena, in London, Chris Eubank Junior got back to winning ways in emphatic fashion.
After the split decision defeat to Billy Joe Saunders last time out, Eubank took on a risky encounter facing the unbeaten Dmitry Chudinov last night. However, whereas in the encounter with Saunders, Eubank had gotten off to a slow start he made no such error last night.
The immediate build-up to the fight saw doubts raised as to whether it would go ahead after an argument over neutral officials, but the problem was resolved and Eunbank got his chance to grab a belt.
Round 1 ? Eubank started well with a one-two combination but Chudinov fought back catching Eubank with a blow to the side of the head. Eubank finished the round on top with a flurry of punches forcing Chudinov back.
Round 2 – Eubank stayed close to Chudinov and was caught by a couple of big rights from his opponent. Eubank then had success with a decent body-shot before another good combination saw Chudinov concede ground.
Round 3 – Chudinov had picked up a cut to his eye, the origin of which wasn?t clear and the round was a thriller with both boxers going head-to-head and trading punches with Eubank just about shading the round.
Round 4 – Both fighters continued to trade blows and Eubank was caught with a big right to the body, both fighters were now bloodied with blood seeping from Eubank?s nose but the Russian appeared to be tiring under the onslaught.
Round 5 – Eubank, coming forward, got caught by a big left hand and looked troubled but the Brighton fighter continued to walk forward towards Chudinov catching the Russian with a couple of big-right hand punches. Eubank sensed the end could be near but Chudinov, with blood pouring from his eye, was proving to be a resilient and tough opponent.
Round 6 – Some show-boating from Eubank saw Chudinov miss wildly with some punches and Eubank stepped through the gears late in the round to affirm his authority in the fight.
Round 7 – The Russian?s eye was getting worse and Eubank was starting to pick Chudinov apart with punches being thrown to the body and head with the Russian throwing very little back in response.
Round 8 – With the cut eye getting worse the referee took a close look at Chudinov before the action began but he was allowed to continue. Eubank poured forward unleashing some big punches, causing the Russian to lose his gum shield at one point but still Chudinov hung in there bravely.
Round 9 – The Russian?s eye was, by now, a real mess and Eubank continued to land numerous decent punches whilst pleasing the crowd with some more showboating. At one stage Eubank threw nine or ten punches in quick succession without any response from Chudinov.
Round 10 – Unleashing more accurate punches suddenly Eubank looked as if the pace he was fighting at was catching up with him. The Russian tried to catch Eubank with a huge right but missed and Eubank unloaded a punch of his own to show he was still in control of what was now a one-sided fight.
Round 11 – His face a bloody mess, Chudinov showed heart by coming forward and in a quiet round both fighters headed back to the corner knowing the final round was next up.
Round 12 – With the final three minutes upon us, Eubank caught Chudinov with a huge left and then unleashed punch after punch, the Russian looked to be absorbing the pressure but with sixty seconds of the bout left the referee stepped in to save Chudinov from further punishment.
It was a fantastic way in which to bounce back from that Saunders defeat.
