On the under-card of the Haye v Bellew promotion last night was an intriguing clash in the welterweight division.
The match-up fitted Birmingham?s 23-year-old emerging talent, Sam Eggington, against the veteran former two-time world champion Paul Malignaggi.
In a cagey affair, it was the 36-year-old Paul Malignaggi that moved around the ring trying to stay away from the punches of Eggington.
In the sixth round it looked as if the veteran Paul Malignaggi was going to get the better of the Birmingham man when he unleashed a barrage of some 20-punches.
However, Eggington responded well and won the fight in the 8th round when Paul Malignaggi was caught with a body punch that left him badly winded and unable to continue.
In the post-fight ringside interviews the New York based fighter heavily hinted that he was now, after this loss, set to call time on his glittering career.
As for Eggington he?s now looking at a crack at the European welterweight crown, bring it on we say.
