On the under-card at the Eddie Hearn promoted show at the Barclaycard Arena, in Birmingham, Sam Eggington went head-to-head with Ceferino Rodriguez for the EBU welterweight crown.
In a thrilling encounter Eggington was to go on to claim the crown.
In a bruising encounter, both fighters were marked up around the eyes as they traded blows.
However, the fight was to edge the way of Eggington when Rodriguez started to tire.
In the eleventh road Eggington caught Rodriguez with a huge left hook to the head. The punch knocked Rodriguez down and the Spaniard fell through the ropes and out of the ring.
Instantly the fight was stopped and the medical stuff rushed to aid the stricken Spaniard. Thankfully, Rodriguez was able to get to his feet and make his way out of the arena.
Eggington, who now has a record that reads 21-3 with 13 wins coming by way of knockout, was far too good for Rodriguez with his volume of punches dominating the destination of the fight, at the time of the knockout Eggington was five rounds up on the Spaniard who has seen his record slip to 24-2 with 12 wins coming by way of knockout.
After the fight, Eggington remarked,
?It was a messy fight.
?He?s not the biggest puncher.?
As for Eggington?s future, his promoter Barry Hearn remarked after the fight,
?He?ll have a defense in September. I want Danny Garcia after that.?
Exciting times ahead for Eggington then.
