Last night Birmingham witnessed a classic welterweight fight between Carl Eggington and Dale Evans.
After the withdrawal of Frankie Gavin, through a foot injury, Evans had stepped into the void to provide the fast emerging Eggington with a more than plausible opponent.
With Evans having beaten Eggington in a Prize-Fighter tournament, Eggington was looking to not only retain his British and Commonwealth welterweight titles but also gain revenge for that loss.
But the twenty-two year old champion was nearly on the end of an upset when his Welsh opponent caught him with a right-hand that sent him crashing to the canvas.
But Eggington got back to his feet and then produced some slick boxing, keeping Evans at distance, to build up a comfortable points lead. As the fight entered the 11th round it looked as if Eggington was going to force a stoppage but Evans held on bravely and in the last round launched an assault of his own, trying to stop Eggington, with some crisp left hooks.
The final decision saw Eggington take the verdict on the score-cards of all three judges, with the point scores being:-
? 117-110
? 117-110
? 116-110
The win took Eggington?s record to 17-2 whilst Evans slipped to 10-3, however, credit must be given to Evans who, after Gavin pulled out, took the fight at ten days? notice.
