Although Stephen Smith was the star of the Olympia promotion, in Liverpool, last night, another boxer ran him very close.
Called in as a late replacement to take on the 29-year-old lightweight Gary Buckland, Sean Dodd put on a very impressive display.
Cheered on by his vociferous support Dodd proceeded to take the fight to Buckland and from the 8th round onwards Buckland was taking far too many heavy shots.
When the bell ended to signal the end of the fight at the end of the 10th round, the referee gave Dodd the decision by 97-95 although Buckland could have ha dno arguments if the score was by a wider margin.
Dodd, in securing this unexpected win, will now fight for the British lightweight title against the current champion Scott Cardle with Eddie Hearn remarking about the clash taking place,
?100 per cent.
?It?s a Cinderella story. Now he?s going to fight Scott Cardle.?
In winning, Dodd took his record to 10-1 with 2 wins coming by knockout whilst Buckland saw his record slip to 30-7 with 10 wins coming by way of knockout.
