Over in Washington DC, in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time, James DeGale was making a defence of his IBF super-middleweight belt.

DeGale was matched against the very capable Mexican, Rogelio Medina. In a fight whereby the challenger was never out of the contest, DeGale took a unanimous decision to hold onto his belt, with the scorecards of the judges reading,

? 115 ? 113
? 117 ? 111
? 115 ? 113

The win takes DeGales record to 23-1 with his solitary defeat coming against his British rival, George Groves.

Interviewed after the fight DeGale expressed disappointment that he hadn?t fulfilled his pre-match promise to knock Medina out, remarking to the media,

‘He’s a very tough fighter, he has obviously got a lot stronger and better over the last year and a half

‘I should be taking out people like Medina, that’s no disrespect to him. But I’m still learning.

‘But the main thing is I am still champ. I’ve got to work on things still.’

DeGale?s next fight could be a unification fight with the WBC champion Badou Jack.

Jack, who also fought on the same bill last night, made a successful defence of his title against the Canadian fighter Lucian Bute or perhaps we could see an all-British affair with DeGale taking on Liverpool?s Callum Smith.
