Right down the undercard last night, at the Manchester Arena promotion that saw Anthony Joshua defend his IBF heavyweight title against Eric Molina, Conor Benn made his sixth professional appearance in the professional game.

Conor, son of the legend that is Nigel Benn, entered the ring having won his first five professional fights.

Conor was due to fight a couple of weeks ago, at Wembley, but was forced to withdraw after being laid-up with a bout of shingles.

Last night, Conor was matched against another relative novice, Steve Backhouse, a fighter who was having his seventh fight.

In a sparsely populated arena, at around 17:45, the bell sounded and Conor went to work.

Very early in the round Conor caught his opponent with a flurry of well-placed punches. But, as the fight reached the one-minute of the first round mark, Conor unleashed a body punch that saw Backhouse drop his guard and a left hook caught Backhouse flush on the chin.

Backhouse hit the canvas and it looked as if he would struggle to get up. But get up he did only to walk into another flurry of punches that saw the referee stop the fight with just 67 on the clock.

It was another good win from a 20-year-old from whom so much is expected.
