Up in Glasgow last night, on the under-card of the Burns v Di Rocco WBA super-lightweight world title fight, Conor Benn took his second step of his professional career.

Conor, son of the legend that was Nigel Benn, was taking on the tough and durable Luke Keleher over four rounds.

Keleher should have been Benn?s opponent for his debut fight but, for reasons beyond our knowledge, the opponent was changed at the last minute.

Benn, just nineteen years of age, was cheered on by his father Nigel and took the verdict, in the four round encounter; by a points score of 40-36.

However, Benn didn?t have it all his own way as Keleher produced a display that will give the Benn camp plenty to think about when they reflect on the fight.

Coming forward in a similar style to that his father used, Benn unloaded barrage after barrage of punches but was caught far too often by my liking by Keleher?s own punches.

Benn may not have been wobbled, but as he moves up through the ranks, the youngster won?t be so fortunate against bigger punches.

But, it has to be said, it was an interesting encounter and the sight of Nigel Benn jumping into the ring to congratulate both fighters, especially his son, on a decent fight, brought back so many memories of what the Dark Destroyer did for British boxing during his heyday.
