Very few boxers can boast that they started their professional career with a fight at the legendary New York venue, Madison Square Garden.
But that is precisely what the Irish boxer, Michael Conlan, will be able to do after tonight.
Conlan, who became the first Irish boxer to win a World Amateur title and who also captured a bronze medal at the Olympics, is set to make his debut as a professional against Tim Ibarra.
The famous Maddison Square Garden venue is expected to, on St Patricks Day, be filled with a vociferous bunch of Irish-Americans cheering their man on.
Conlan, talking about making his debut in such esteemed surroundings, has remarked,
‘I don’t have to worry about the crowd or my opponent – I just have to worry about myself.
‘Because if I perform then no-one can beat me.’
And on his opponent, Tim Ibarra, he further added,
‘I know this lad is going to come in with a full training camp – he’s going to be hungry and he’s going to want to win,’ he added.
‘But as soon as he gets punched it’s going to be different.
‘I want to go in there and perform and if I perform everything else follows.
‘It will be my first time in New York on St Patrick’s Day and I think New York does it bigger and better than anywhere else in the world.’
It promises to be an exhilarating occasion and here at Vital Boxing we wish Michael Conlan all the best on his professional debut at the venue that calls itself the best venue in the world.
