Ahead of the promotion at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, last night, many boxing pundits had picked the fight between Luke Campbell and Derry Mathews as having the potential to be the best of the night.
The general consensus of opinion was that Mathews power could trouble Campbell who had been dropped in two of his professional fights so far and lost one as a consequence.
With the WBC Silver lightweight being defended by Campbell, Mathews would have been hoping that he could stop Campbell and gate-crash the world lightweight scene once again.
However, Campbell had other ideas and totally dominated the fight, putting the veteran Mathews on the canvas a total of three times.
After two early rounds whereby Campbell used his height advantage to keep Mathews at distance, the fight sprung into life in the third round when Mathews was floored in round three. Mathews beat the count, dusted himself down and was still around to hear the bell.
Round four though saw Campbell step up a gear and Mathews was dropped a further two occasions, both times by powerful body-shots, the second of the two fourth round knock-downs saw Mathews fail to beat the count and Campbell having had a point to prove had done just that.
Campbell?s camp will now be looking to move their man onwards and upwards whilst Mathews, now thirty-three years of age, might be left to consider what?s left for him in this sport.
