At the Liverpool Echo Arena, on Saturday night, Liverpool?s Callum Smith took a huge step towards a possible world title fight.

In an all-Liverpool super-middleweight contest, with the vacant British super-middleweight title up for grabs, Callum was matched against Rocky Fielding.

Both fighters entered the contest unbeaten in the professional ranks with Smith having accumulated seventeen wins to the twenty-one of Fielding.

Before the first bell many pundits were predicting a close contest that could go either way. However Callum Smith had other ideas and was to produce a sensational first round stoppage.

Smith was on top of Fielding from the first bell and had his opponent on the floor inside the first thirty seconds.

Although Fielding got to his feet he was floored a further two times and the referee, Phil Edwards, had no choice other than to stop the fight.

Fielding was troubled, from the start, by Smith?s body-shots and the defeat means he will have to rebuild his career.

As for Smith, there is already talk of a world title fight against the WBC champion Badou Jack, who recently beat George Groves.

On the evidence of what Smith produced on Saturday night, in Liverpool, we could be about to see another world champion crowned from the Smith family.
