With the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament having gotten underway last weekend, it is the turn of the super-middleweight competition to get underway this weekend.
The first fight of the tournament takes place at the Liverpool Echo Arena when Liverpool?s Callum Smith will take on the Swedish fighter, Erik Skoglund.
For British fight fans the super-middleweight division of this tournament is full of intrigue with three other British fighters, George Groves, Chris Eubank Jnr and Jamie Cox, all participating.
Callum Smith withdrew from a world-title fight to take part in this tournament and ahead of the first quarter-final, the 27-year-old has remarked,
‘I view it as a big opportunity to make a name for myself.
‘These fights could make me a household name and a superstar in the sport. I believe I’m more than capable of becoming the best in the division and winning this tournament can only help me get there.’
‘I’m happy that I’ve got a second chance at a world title through this tournament.?
Callum has an unbeaten record as a professional, winning all 22 fights, 17 by knockout.
With George Groves entering the tournament as a world title holder, the person who wins the competition will hold that belt, prompting Callum to further add,
‘To hold a world title is every fighter’s dream but I felt this tournament had more to offer with three guaranteed fights if I do my job and keep winning.’
But Callum shouldn?t under-estimate his Swedish opponent, Skoglund is unbeaten in 26 fights with the Liverpool fighter further adding,
‘I won’t underestimate him because he’s 26-0 for a reason but I think I will beat him in every department.
‘I expect this to be a tough fight and I have trained for 12 rounds but if I hurt him early, I can definitely kick him out of the ring when I get the chance.’
It promises, as it unfolds, to be some tournament.
