Topping the bill at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, last night Callum Smith took another step towards a crack at a version of the super-middleweight crown in defeating Christopher Rebrasse.
The fight, as many suspected it would, went the full twelve rounds with Rebrasse proving, just as he had done against George Groves on his last visit to the United Kingdom, a very durable opponent.
At the sound of the final bell, the judges scores were given as:-
? 118-110
? 118-110
? 120-107
With the margins quite possibly being a little wider than many watching the fight thought they would be.
In beating Rebrasse, Callum Smith took his impressive record to 17-0 with 12 coming by way of a knockout. However, that could easily have been thirteen as Callum had Rebrasse on the canvas in round ten but just couldn?t quite find another big body-shot to finish his opponent off.
Callum boxed beautifully throughout the fight picking his punches well and weathering any storms that came his way from Rebrasse who, despite being a more than competent boxer lacks sufficient punching power to force his way into world class.
Championing his fighter after the verdict had been read out, Eddie Hearn suggested that Callum Smith will soon be elevated to the #1 contender by the WBC and be heading towards a world title fight.
Could we be set to see Callum Smith take on the winner of George Groves v Badou Jack?
