At the Braehead Arena, in Glasgow, the career of Scotland?s former world champion suffered an almighty blow last night.

Looking to get back to winning ways after losing his WBO lightweight title to the America Terence Crawford, Burns was beaten, on a split decision, by the fighter from Montenegro.

The scores, given by the three judges were:-

? 115-113 (in favour of Zlaticanin)

115-113 (in favour of Zlaticanin)

115-113 (in favour of Burns)

But in all honesty it never really looked as if Burns would get the better of his unbeaten opponent.

Burns got off to the worst possible start when he was floored inside the first thirty seconds. Although Burns did well to get off the canvas and serious advances forward were always met with a heavy punch.

Having switched trainers, with Burns now working with Tony Sims, there were indications that Burns had rediscovered some of the speed and movement he had in his earlier fights but you couldn?t help noticing that Zlaticanin was troubling the Scot with his body punches.

Prior to the contest it had been suggested that Burns would get a world title shot if he beat Zlaticanin, now the question has to be asked, what next for Ricky Burns after this defeat?
