Over in Washington last night Adrien Broner took on Ashley Theoplane.
The fight should have been for the WBA140 pound belt but Broner?s failure to make the weight and subsequently refuse to attempt the extra poundage he arrived carrying at the weigh-in, meant that Broner was stripped of his belt.
In what can only be described as a strange situation, the fight went ahead whereby, if he won, Theoplane would be declared the WBA light welterweight champion.
As it turned out the fight didn?t live up to its hype and the WBA light-welterweight belt remains vacant after Broner stopped Theoplane in the ninth round.
To us it appeared that Broner got lucky with the referee stopping the fight after Theoplane was actually caught with a low blow.
The verdict means that Broner now has a record that reads 32-2 with 24 of his wins coming by way of knockout whilst Theoplane sees his record slip to 39-7-1 with 11 of those wins coming by way of knockout.
As for the vacant title, the suggestion doing the rounds is that the upcoming fight between our own Ricky Burns and Michele Di Rocco, on May 21st, will be upgraded to decide who should be the Super WBA light-welterweight champion.
