Continuing on the heavyweight scene, a fringe contender in Shannon Briggs claimed win #56 of his professional career on Saturday night.
Fighting at the Ring of Dreams Boxing Gym, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Briggs was taking on the journeyman fighter, Cory Phelps, who entered the ring with a record that read 15-7-1.
Predictably, Briggs won stopping the out-classed Phelps in the 1st round after having his opponent down on three occasions.
In beating Phelps, Briggs picked up the interim WBC Latino heavyweight title and wants another shot at a world title.
In recent weeks Briggs has, it would appear, been stalking Wladimir Klitschko, probably in an attempt to force the Ukrainian to give him a world title fight.
However, although Briggs is the #14 ranked WBA heavyweight; the only way he?ll get a world title fight, in our opinion, is if he steps in as a late substitute or if one of the heavyweight champs makes a voluntary defence.
