The colourful character that is Shannon Briggs could soon be fighting for the world heavyweight title.

Back in May, when Briggs beat Emilio Zarate, courtesy of a first round knockout, Briggs was being led to believe that a win would set up a fight against the top-of-the-bill fighter that night, David Haye.

But Haye didn?t oblige Briggs and a war of words has subsequently ensued.

But whilst Haye continues to hand-pick his fights, his latest being a so-called ?grudge? fight against the cruiserweight title holder Tony Bellew, Briggs is, so it seems, set to fight for the WBA version of the world heavyweight title.

Apparently, Briggs ranked #4 by the WBA is set to take on Fred Oquendo who is ranked #5 by the WBA.

Briggs, who has a record that reads 60-6-1 with 53 of his wins coming by way of knockout, is ready to step into the void created by the injury suffered by Oquendo?s scheduled opponent, Browne.

It?d be kind of ironic if Briggs was to win the world title and then deny David Haye the chance to fight him wouldn?t it?
