With Tony Bellew operating as a heavyweight at the moment, the WBC declared, in midweek, he?d been nominated as the WBC Emeritus Champion, allowing the WBC belt to be contested.

Last night, in Dortmund, at the Westfalenhalle, Marcus Huck and Mairis Briedis went head-to-head for the belt.

In what was an engaging contest, it was the Latvian fighter, Breidis, who emerged as the new WBC cruiserweight champion, beating Huck by a unanimous decision.

At the sound of the final bell, the points totals were given as:

? 118 ? 109
? 116 ? 111
? 117 ? 110

all in favour of 34-year-old Breidis.

Breidis, on the back of the win, sees his record move to 22-0 and has the chance to establish himself as a major name in the division.

However, he?ll be perfectly aware that Bellew only has to say the word and it?ll be the Liverpudlian climbing between the ropes to face him next.
