Last night, across the pond, Timothy Bradley may well have scored a convincing points win over Jessie Vargas, but the unanimous verdict doesn?t tell the full story.
After the dust had settled, Bradley was awarded the fight by the following point verdicts:
? 116-112
? 117-111
? 115-112
However, only a mistake from the referee, Pat Russell, stopped Jessie Vargas from producing a stunning finish.
Vargas caught Bradley with a huge right hand and Bradley looked to be out on his feet. One more punch would have seen Bradley knocked out but, amazingly, Russell halted the fight some ten seconds early believing that he had heard the bell sound for the end of the fight.
The result takes Bradley?s record to 32-1-1 with 12 wins coming by way of knockout whilst Vargas slipped to 26-1 with 9 wins coming by way of knockout.
But, I doubt whether we?ve heard the last of the referee?s faux-pas!
