Reports filtered through, over the weekend that Nick Blackwell was back in hospital.
It seems that Blackwell, who was put into an induced coma following his British title fight with Chris Eubank Jnr, was taken into hospital after complaining of feeling unwell during a sparring session.
Twenty-six-year-old Blackwell subsequently received surgery to reduce swelling on the brain and is now in a stable condition.
It is, considering that Blackwell no longer has a boxing licence, an alarming situation.
Our concerns are shared by Blackwell?s former trainer Gary Lockett who, commenting on the situation, has been quoted as having remarked,
‘I couldn’t believe Nick would be so stupid as to put his health at risk.
‘I can’t believe the boxer he sparred with, and coach or coaches involved, would ever allow Nick to spar when he’s had a brain injury.
‘In due course, I hope they are dealt with by the British Boxing Board of Control in the correct manner.’
It seems that Blackwell?s love of boxing may have gotten the better of him, with Lockett further adding,
‘We thought that was all going very well and while we knew Nick missed boxing, we obviously didn’t realise the extent to which he missed it.
‘I am deeply saddened by what has happened. Nick is not just an ex-boxer of mine, but also someone I consider to be a friend.’
Here at Vital Boxing we sincerely hope that Nick Blackwell makes a full recovery, but there are so many questions that still need asking as to why something like this has happened.
