Nigel Benn was a fighter that, when he boxed, had people on their feet in anticipation.
His status as one of the heroes of the modern era of British Boxing can never be doubted.
Nowadays Benn lives in Australia and at 51 years of age his days as a ring warrior are long over.
However, there is a new Benn about to enter the gladiatorial arena a light-welterweight going by the name of Conor Benn
Just 18 years of age Conor, the son of Nigel, is hoping to represent Barbados, the land of his grandfather, at the 2016 Rio Olympics, after the Olympics Conor is looking to turn professional.
The past few days have seen Nigel Benn in this country looking at different trainers in order to place Conor at a camp, once he turns professional, where he will thrive.
One camp already visited is that of Ricky Hatton and there are some video clips on You-Tube which show that, even at the age of fifty-one, Benn still looks in formidable shape and the speed at which he can throw punches still, and with some considerable venom, is still a wonderful sight.
Speaking about his son the man known as the Dark Destroyer during his ring career had this to say,
?I know all the dangers boxing brings but my son is his own man and at 18 is old enough to make up his own mind about what he wants to do.
?Whatever he does, he will have to achieve it himself, he won?t be doing anything off my back or my reputation.
?It?s up to him now how far he goes.?
Of course, one of Benn?s main rivals during his heyday also has a son who is already carving out a distinguished career as a professional, Chris Eubank Junior, son of Chris Eubank.
Is there a possibility that the two off-spring could meet in the ring?
Benn had this to say on the subject,
?Eubank?s son is already a successful boxer but older than my lad.
?Me and Chris had a few things to say for ourself in our prime and maybe our sons will one day face each other in the ring. You can never say never.?
A name to look out for then ? Conor Benn!
