In the early hours of this morning (UK time), Tony Bellew?s dreams of taking the WBC light-heavyweight title off of Adonis Stevenson, ended in gallant defeat.

Beforehand Bellew, who was fighting on his 31st birthday, had spoken about bringing the WBC belt home but Adonis Stevenson, despite being the shorter man, was always the man in control.

Bellew had few successes against the hard-punching Stevenson, but did give the champion a bloody nose in the third round. There was also the small matter of Stevenson being floored by Bellew, although it was adjudged to have been a slip.

The end to the fight came in round six when Stevenson hit Bellew with a body shot before a left hand put the Liverpool fighter on the canvas with the referee then calling a halt to proceedings.

Following his defeat, Bellew had nothing but praise for the champion, remarking to the media,

‘I gave it everything and the better man won. Gutted.’

The fans who travelled, I’ll be forever in your debt. I’m truly shocked. Like I said the better man won, no excuses. Thanks again for the support.’

Whilst Stevenson, who may be looking for a unification fight next, couldn?t resist having a sly did at Bellew remarking,

?He said I?m a dwarf and the dwarf knocked him out.?

For Bellew, having failed in his dream to become the WBC light heavyweight champion, it looks a long road back!
