Tony Bellew, right from Day One, believed he had what it takes to beat David Haye.
The manner in which he went about achieving his goal may have been more WWE based but Haye swallowed the bait and signed for the fight.
The build-up to the first bell was one of the most controversial in recent years to such an extent the British Boxing Board of Control had to intervene.
But all along Bellew insisted that Haye wasn?t the fighter he thought he was and that he?d not fought anyone decent since he beat Dereck Chisora.
Last night Bellew proved his point, stopping the former world heavyweight champion in the eleventh round and introducing himself to a heavyweight division that is alive.
After the fight Bellew had a few words to say about his victory (as you?d expect) to the media with the fighter remarking,
‘He’s probably the hardest puncher in the world, and he’s so quick early on, he’s like a sprinter. He can really hit but he can also take a few himself.
‘In my eyes I’ve beaten the best cruiserweight this country has ever produced and one of the best heavyweights. I am honoured to fight in the same ring as him. I’ve looked up to him.
‘He made the same mistake everybody else does. He underestimated me. Watch me on tape and I’m terrible but in the ring I’m harder to hit than you think.’
It remains to be seen what the future has in store for Tony Bellew.
