Last night at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, Tony Bellew made a successful defence of his WBC world cruiserweight title.
Matched against the American BJ Flores and cheered on by the vociferous home support, Bellew made an emphatic defence of the title he won, at Goodison Park, against Ilunga Makabu back in May.
Although, ahead of the fight, Flores had talked a good fight, the American, despite having lost only twice in his professional career, wasn?t in the same class as the champion.
After a cagey first round where both fighters had success, the contest sprung to life in round two when Bellew had Flores on the canvas three times, each time the America was caught by a left hook from Bellew.
Flores bravely got to his feet on each occasion but when Big-hitting Bellew caught Flores with another huge punch, in the next round, there was no coming back for the challenger who couldn?t beat the referees count.
The result was probably what was expected and Bellew will now be looking for an opponent that will provide him with a challenge and a big pay-day, someone like David Haye?
