Over in Atlantic City, Barnet?s Darren Barker produced a scintillating display to take the IBF middleweight title off of Australia?s Daniel Geale.

Cheered on by his supporters, the Chelsea supporting Barker took the fight to the champion in the earlier rounds, hitting the Australian with clusters of shots and knocking Geale out of his stride.

Geale caught Barker with an occasional uppercut but Barker looked to be in control. The fifth and sixth rounds saw Geale come back into the fight and a stunning body-shot, from Geale, in round six had Barker dropping to the canvas.

Barker arose at nine but looked in trouble. Geale moved in to finish the contest catching Barker with numerous blows. Barker refused to concede though and the round finished with Barker stopping the Australian in his tracks with a few hard blows of his own.

With the Australian?s corner urging Geale to finish Barker off in round seven, believing the challenger had given his all, Barker rediscovered the composure he?d shown earlier to keep Geale at bay and landing, in the process, some punishing shots.

As the fight entered its closing stages Barker remained on top, landing more blows than Geale. The final round saw Barker caught by Geale but the Barnet man held on to ensure it was the three judges that decided the victor.

After what seemed to be an age the ring announcer read the scorecards out as thus:-

Judge Andy Rubinstein scored it 114113 to Geale, Judge Barbara Perez scored it 116112 to Barker, and Judge Carlos Ortiz scored it 114113 to Barker before the strains of??and the new????.? Saw Barker, his entourage, his supporters in the arena and thousands watching the early morning coverage, dance a jig of delight.

Bravo Darren Barker, you did British Boxing proud.
