Last night, in Newport, South Wales, Andrew Selby had his first professional fight.
Andrew Selby, whose brother is Lee, the current IBF world featherweight champion, entered the ring with a reputation as an outstanding amateur. In fact, as an amateur, he was so good he is acknowledged as the most decorated amateur boxer Wales has ever had.
In his first fight Andrew, cheered on by a partisan crowd, was matched with the durable Tanzanian fighter, Haji Juma.
Andrew got his professional career off to a flying start, stopping his opponent after two minutes of round four when the referee stepped in to prevent Juma taking any further punishment.
Prior to the stoppage Andrew had his opponent on the canvas twice, once in the first and again in the third round with some crisp, accurate and powerful shots.
After a victorious debut, Andrew is looking for a quick return to the ring, remarking after the bout,
‘It’s not confirmed, but I’m trying to have another one or two bouts before Christmas.?
If so, Vital Boxing will be keen to watch this fighter progress over the coming months.
