Last night, I was fortunate to attend an event at the Alban Arena, in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
The event, entitled ?An Evening with Frank Bruno? saw a couple of hundred boxing fans descend on the venue to hear Frank give a warts-an-all account of his life.
Bruno, one of our favourite ever sportsman, spoke about his early life, a period where he struggled to steer clear of trouble, his early boxing career as an amateur, his rise to become world champion despite several set-backs on the way and his dalliance (and subsequent recovery) with mental health problems.
The night saw Bruno speak openly about his defeats, against the likes of James ?Bonecrusher? Smith, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, whilst also recalling how he finally achieved his dream of becoming the heavyweight champion of the world when he beat Oliver McCall.
The show, hosted by the comedian Jed Stone, has a few moments of comedy with Frank not being afraid to inject his own unique sense of humour.
There was also a raffle and a mini-auction, with the funds raised going to the Frank Bruno Foundation, an organisation designed to help those who are facing similar medical problems Frank had to overcome.
I?d like to give you a deeper insight of the evening but I?m caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, whereby I want those who followed Frank to find the article interesting but not ruin it for those who might want to go and see the show as it tours the country.
All in all a great evening of entertainment and one I?d highly recommend any Frank Bruno fans attend.
