In the big fight in Las Vegas last night between two very classy operatives in Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto, it was to be the former who took the honours.
Fighting for the WBC middleweight title, many had claimed that predicting who would win was almost impossible and that the decision could go either way.
However, looking at the score-cards, you?d think Alvarez was in total command with the judges scoring it:
? 119-109
? 118-110
? 117-111
But those who watched the fight scored it a lot closer and thought Cotto was unfortunate with the scoring.
Talking about his success, Alavarez had this to say in his post-fight interview,
‘I’m very happy.
?Much respect to Miguel Cotto. He’s a great champion. But now it’s my era.’
And on his future plans, particularly a bout with the unbeaten Gennady Golvkin, Alvarez continued,
‘If he wants to fight right now, I’ll put on the gloves and fight him right now.?
It remains to be seen though if Cotto is prepared to waive the re-match clause that was highlighted as being in his contract ahead of the fight.
But, the mouth does water at the prospect of Alvarez, who has a record that reads 46 wins from 48 fights, going up against a fighter, in Golovkin, who is being hailed as the best pound-for-pound in the world with a record that reads 34-0 with 31 wins coming by the big knockout.
Alvarez Beats Cotto on Points!
